Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, and it’s gaining popularity here in the United States. In my novel, The Arrangement, Alexa offers her Brazilian husband, Leonardo, a glass of caipirinha in the epilogue.
There are very few ingredients involved in making the drink, but ask anyone who’s had one and they’ll tell you just how much they love it. It’s popular at Brazilian restaurants, known as churrascarias here in the United States. However, any self-respecting mixologist should be able to prepare one for you since the International Bartenders Association named it one of their official cocktails.
Below are a few recipes, in case you’re inclined to make one up yourself. See which one you like best.
Recipe 1

Ingredients
- 1/8 wedge lime
- 1 tablespoon sugar, or more to taste
- 1 1/2 ounces cachaca, or light rum
- Ice
Directions
Place the lime and sugar in the bottom of a glass. Using the handle of a heavy wooden spoon, crush and mash the lime segment into the sugar. Add the cachaca or rum, and stir. Add ice as desired, stir, and serve.
